Massive Attacks in Orissa, India – whole villages of Christians being burned

Oh, how I wish I were in India right now.

Today I received word that there have been terrible massacres in Orissa. About two weeks ago a Hindu leader was killed in an attack by 20 men suspected of being Maoist (Communist) rebels. But the very powerful, radical Hindu community has blamed the attack on Christians. The persecution and unrest in the state of Orissa has been happening for over a year, but the situation has exploded dramatically since the end of August.

The radicals have gone on rampages, burning churches and homes, and violently raping, beating, kidnapping, and killing the Christians. Those who have managed to escape the mobs have fled to the jungles to survive. The flooding and heavy rains of the current monsoon season have made the situation worse for those in hiding, many of whom have now been without food for many days.

Orissa is located just above Andra Pradesh, the state where the Mekala family lives and ministers. The violence is escalating and the children and staff at the Paderu home, only 30 miles from Orissa, are now in very real danger.

Sudheer has said that the government has completely shut down the media in order to prevent the story from leaking out worldwide and all formal reports are grossly underestimating how terrible the situation really is. The government has close all the Christian schools but is doing little or nothing to help the suffering. Mommy Mekala has said that the children at the orphanage cannot sleep for fear that they will awaken to an attack.

This is what Sudheer writes (emphasis mine):

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This is a time of mourning in India. The situation is critical in India in the state Orissa, the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh and around 30 km from the place where we are having a Children Home in Paderu. Right now there are tensions in the villages and many districts. Hindu mobs of around 700-800 are attacking villages where the Christians are during the nights and burning the whole villages. The unofficial report from the Christians is that at least 950 Christians are missing and around 50 churches are burned along with whole villages where the Christians live are burnt. We are planning to go and visit some of the villages to assess the situation in one week time. But in the mean time we urge every brother and sister in Christ to pray for the Christians who have lost their homes and in fact everything. We do not know the intensity of the need but one thing we know is that there is immense need for food provisions and need to build homes, churches. Please do pray for the need. I also request you kindly send this update to friends for their prayers.

In His Service, Sudheer

Please pray.

(The children’s homes referred to are part of Bless India Ministries.)

Proselytization and Conversion are FDI or foreign direct investment in India. Funded by organisations abroad, missionaries convert the poor by offering inducements. There is no altruism in the business.

May our Christian brothers and sisters who suffer in Orissa right now surrender themselves in the Almighty hands of God. May they be in peace that the evil men do to them are meant by God for the good, and nobody knows what is good better than our Lord Jesus Christ! (Gen 50:20) I know God is with them, hold on tight! I’ll be praying for you. 🙂
